Discovering China at the British Museum (Part 2): The evolution of trade and political relationships

  • This event has passed.

26 July 2019 @ 7:05 pm - 8:00 pm

Interested in Chinese history, culture and traditions? In part 2 of our tourwe will discover how the evolution of the political, economic and social system of China resulted in the country slowly opening up to the Western culture. As superbly-crafted Chinese artefacts started being exported to neighbouring countries and even to the Mediterranean area through “silk roads”, China got exposed to the influence of several different cultures, societies and religions. Moreover, as the diplomatic and bureaucratic system developed and became increasingly sophisticated, China progressively opened its borders to the West, laying the foundations for the modern network of international relations.

In this tour we will focus on the main contribution that each dynasty gave to building this network, from the Mongol period under Quibilai Khan, through the Qing dynasty (China’s last Imperial dynasty), to modern times, through the birth of the Republic of China and, finally, the rise of the Communist Party with Mao Zedong.

Our Discovering China tour is split into 2 parts over the same day.  Join one, or both, depending on your interest!

Meet our guide Sweta Tagliabue:

Sweta Tagliabue got an MA in Chinese language and culture at the Catholic University of Milan (Italy), where she studied Mandarin Chinese and Chinese history, philosophy and literature. Sweta worked in Milan as a tour guide for a year, giving tours in Mandarin to give the opportunity to Chinese tourists to discover the city of Milan and the history of its beautiful Sforza castle. Her compelling and engaging way of telling stories helps her audience to understand the value of the museum objects, the story behind the history of each of them and their contribution to shaping the Chinese society into what it is today easily.
